Nate's 2nd Year!

When I was putting together this video, I was just shocked at the transformation of this little guy. He has come so far this year, or even the last 6 months. See for your self!

Okay, now on to the updates...

Update #1-Kidneys
Recently we met with Nate's NEW kidney doctor. Our previous doctor left the practice and we were assigned to a new doctor in the practice. When I heard this, I started crying. I felt very silly crying over a doctor who had left. When I thought about it, we had put so much faith and trust in this man to get us through such a difficult area of worry with our son. So I think it was natural for me to be in a sense of "mourning" over the loss of that relationship.

That being said, we are very pleased with his new doctor! For one, it is a woman, and she has a much more sensitive bed side manner than the previous doctor. She seemed already very on top of Nate's chart and we just had an overwhelming sense of ease with her.

The last time Nate had blood work was when he was in the hospital in May. Ironically, for being so sick, he had pretty good numbers for that draw. Our new doctor wanted to make sure this wasn't a fluke so she encouraged us to get new blood drawn within a month. We explained to her about how difficult it is getting to take Nate's blood. He tenses up and becomes so emotional, most times it is hard for the nurses to find a vein, and to keep it flowing. When we were in the ER, the nurse that did his IV was able to use this neat little device that numbed the area when the medicine was pushed through the skin using CO2 through a high pressured instrument. It makes a loud noise, but ultimately it calms him down more if the DO need to go digging around for his little vein.

No typical blood draw clinics carry this, so we asked if there was some way we could get it done there at the hospital. We were so happy to find out that the RN that is on staff at the kidney doctor's office had the tool and we were able to get the blood draw right there!! Even with the numbing tool, he still has a hard time with the blood draw. The nurses were amazed at how strong our little guy was. Hopefully we will get the results back soon.

Update #2-2 year pediatric appointment
Nate is still on the tiny side, falling at the 3rd percentile for weight, but he is eating really well now and has gained a good amount of weight after battling his spell with the Rotavirus. No shots needed!

Update #3- Eyes
Some of you may not know this, but we have been seeing a pediatric eye doctor for about a year. A while ago we noticed that he has a wandering eye, which unfortunately is found of both sides of his families. (I had surgery for my crossed eye prior to kindergarten.) At this visit, our doctor was able to get some good data on Nate. Nate currently wears a patch daily to help strengthen the eye. But the need for surgery seems inevitable. We are going to wait three ore months, and then at our next visit we will see if we are going to move on surgery.

Update #4-Physical Therapy
Over a year ago, we had Nate evaluated developmentally since he was beginning to shows signs of a delay due to his slow weight gain. He qualified for both Occupational and Physical Therapies. The problem was, there was no therapists out there that were available in our area with our availability. So we just worked with him the best we could on our own. Luckily, he has made huge gains on his own. At Christmas, he was released from needing OT, and then in May he was evaluated again and he was released from that too. The PT said that some of the things Nate was demonstrated was actually ABOVE his age range. They are placing him on consult, so if anything comes up before he is 3, we can easily get him back in without the paperwork. But our boy seems to have caught up!

Nate's current favorite things consist of hot dogs, trains, macaroni, dressing up in sister's dress-ups, and helping cook with mom. He is so excited to be a big brother soon!

Our "Dump Everything" Birthday Party!

Our Nate is 2! So hard for me to comprehend. Since he is still such a little guy, I think I keep thinking of him as such a baby, even when he is turning into such a big boy!

We had a construction party for him. It turned out to be so much fun!

Here he is trying to sneak in a few presents when no one was looking.
Nate's current favorite food is donuts, so we had to incorporate them somehow.

Krosby and Nate! (I love the look on Nate's face!)
Instead of a birthday wreath, I figured this was more fitting for his party!
I don't think I have to describe this one....

And here is the cake. I am SO proud of how it turned out. I had gotten a few ideas off of Pinterest; however, I ended up free styling it in the end. (I almost didn't want to cut into it!)

Nate absolutely LOVED having everyone sing to him. (Later I will give a kidney doctor appointment update; however, during his most recent blood draw, we were able to replay the footage of everyone singing to him on his birthday, and it made him calm down. He just re-watched the video over and over again as the nurses were trying to find his vein.....poor little guy.)

Big sister enjoying herself. Later she told us that it was the BEST PARTY EVER!! I guess I have my work cut out for me for her upcoming birthday.
 Barnaby greeting the guests.
Adam and I got Nate a little vacuum for his present, and he loves it. He even tried to take it to bed with him that night. Silly boy!
I am working on a 2nd year video for Nate. I will update more on his medical stuff during this post.

Happy Birthday Nater Gater!! We love you so much!

Our New Four Legged Family Member!

Recently, our family added a new 4 legged canine to the Turley crew. As you might have remembered, we had to say good-bye to our lovable lab Chimi in March. Since then, there has been a pretty big hole in all of our hearts....especially our other doggie Pearl. We were not looking to fill that spot this soon; however, we were blessed to be given a very special new friend who we couldn't resist.

Meet Barnaby!
(Since we brought him home, we have had a few name trials....but Barnaby seems to be the one that is sticking.) Barnaby is a Golden-doodle  If you are not familiar with this breed, it is a Golden Retriever and a Poodle mix. This breed of dog is getting to be quite popular for their lovable nature and their soft poodle hair...versus the typical dog "fur". He is so soft!!!

One of the first things he did when we brought him home was crawl into the kid's bean bags. He still loves cuddling in it.
After his first bath....
He already adores the kids....he even thinks they taste pretty good too.
It's hard to really get a good picture of him with all those curls. He does have eyes under there...I promise.
He even helps the kids with their puzzles!
Barnaby has won over all the other pets; however, sometimes Mr. Bingley is not quite sure what to make of this ball of black curls...
We are predicting that Barnaby will be big like his Daddy, who weighs about 80 pounds. We call him our "gentle giant" because he is so mellow and has such a sweet disposition. We are super happy he has finally figured out the doggie door too!

We are so happy to have another sweet doggie for our kids to love and adore!

Happy 4th of July! (A few days late)

We hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July. We are so thankful for our freedom.

We are also thankful for a very special little boy....one who will soon be an American that finally has a Mommy, Daddy, Big Sissy and Bubba anxiously waiting to love on him!

A Long Overdue Post! (Nate 21 Months)

So I finally felt some energy today and decided to make a long overdue video of all the Turley happenings recently. Other then our adoption news, we pretty much have not done "family" stuff since January. So here is a video with lots of pictures. We had a great spring break with Grandma and Grandpa coming to visit from Iowa. We got to go to the Wildlife zoo, we baked cookies and hung out at Great-Grandma and Grandpa Turley's house. It was a great visit. The weather is definitely warming up around here. My little fish have already been in the pool several times. Tessa and Nate are quickly becoming little buddies that have to do everything together, including dress up!

Speaking of Nate, we have no new updates about his kidneys. We saw his doctor in March but the blood draw he had done prior to the visit did not yield good numbers. Nate is getting pretty strong when we try to hold him down for a blood draw, and if he fights it, the numbers aren't accurate. We will try again in a few months.

We also got to have LOTS of cousin time recently. My sister Kamie came for a visit with her two boys, George and Jack. We had a blast! Easter was so much fun with so many cousins!

The song on the video is Nate and Tessa's favorite song. It is from the end credits of the movie "Wreck it Ralph" and they love to dance to it. I'll have to post a video of them dancing to it at a later date. Enjoy!

Our Starfish Update!

A few months ago, I shared with you our plans to adopt sweet Yana from Russia. There was a tiny problem....Russia wasn't going to let us have her. We were hoping and praying for some glimmer of hope, but after two months, it was made clear that the door to Russia was closed for now.

As a family we are in mourning. We already love Yana and believe she is meant to be our daughter/sister one day. We are trusting that one day the doors of Russia will be open once more, and we will be one of the many families anxiously awaiting their child.

Until then......we have chosen to not close our hearts to the idea of another sweet child needing a family.

About a month ago, I noticed a sweet face listed on Reece's Rainbow. At that point in time, we were not ready to consider "letting Yana go". So I just started praying for this little one to get a family soon. Little did I know, that we were the family he was waiting for.

I would like to introduce you to Nigel!

Nigel lives in another Eastern European country and was abandoned at birth because of this Down Syndrome. But in our opinion Nigel, like Yana, is perfect just the way he is.

The Turley family will continue to love, pray and wait for the day when Yana is in our arms. Until then, we have another sweet face to love, cherish and prepare our home for.

We have a lot of paperwork to get going on not to mention some money to raise. So stay tuned for ways to help us bring our sweet lil' man home.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support through this trying time for our family. We are so excited to embark on this great adventure to bring our son (and one day our daughter) home.

Not So Happy Chimi Update....

Our last post shared about or lovable lab and her cancer. As a family we decided to take a chance and give chemo a try. She seemed to be doing pretty well. However, after two treatments, she took a turn for the worse. We noticed her having a hard time breathing along with continued weight loss. The vet did a x-ray which showed various tumors, along with a very large one on her chest pressing against her heart and lungs. At this point we knew. It was time to let our sweet girl go.
We squeezed in a few Chimi rides this week, along with lots of hugs and kisses (and table scraps galore).

Sweet Chimi-Changa, you will be missed. You were a wonderful family dog that set the bar really high for all other Turley canines.
Goodbye sweet girl...
